WHAT IS SUMMER OF SERVICE? Summer of Service is a national coalition of major youth-serving organizations that are committed to engaging youth in service during the summer months and recognize the potential of youth to identify issues, develop projects, and provide lasting benefits to the communities in which they live through volunteer service. Youth ages 11-18 are encouraged to become part members of the Youth Volunteer Corps of Washington County. This initiative is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with USA Freedom Corps, Summer of Service is supported by AmeriCorps, SeniorCorps, Learn and Serve America, and National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and hundreds of non-profit organizations nationally. Locally youth will have the chance to serve the community is a variety of ways Register on the Volunteer Center of Washington County’s “Volunteer Solutions” website to volunteer for community events (on the main page click “VOLUNTEER NOW”) Select a site (non-profit agency) like the Alzheimer’s Association, a Care Center, Dixie Care and Share, Doctor’s Volunteer Clinic, and other similar organizations and become a regular volunteer during the summer. FOR PROJECT IDEAS for your volunteering and AGENCIES to volunteer with, e-mail Sheena at the Volunteer Center. WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR? 2008 was the second year of the Summer of Service program for Washington County. The first ever project began on June 15th, 2007 with a sock drive lead by two teenage girls from Snow Canyon Middle School. They organized places where the community could donate socks for the needy. THEIR PROJECT WAS A SUCCESS! This is only the beginning of what can be accomplished by the youth of Washington County. In summer of 2008, several huge Y.V.C. activities took place. One involved over 500 teens, paint brushes, and Downtown St. George. That’s right teens took in active “role” in promoting public safety and beautification in Washington County. The other project involved youth collecting canned food in their neighborhoods, designing a model to be designed out of those can, and creating “CanStruction” at the Washington County Fair. In the process, over 800 lbs of food was given to the Dixie Care and Share at a time where their food supply was near empty. These projects are just the beginning of what you can achieve! WHY JOIN? BECAUSE VIDEO GAMES GET BORING AFTER A WHILE TO EARN THE PRESIDENTAL SERVICE AWARD, SUMMER OF SERVICE PIN AND CERTIFICATE, AND TO GET VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE THAT LOOKS GREAT FOR JOB AND COLLEGE APPLICATIONS. TO GET THAT WARM FUZZY FEELING. TO MEET NEW PEOPLE. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY! WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THIS SUMMER! If you are interested in becoming involved in the Summer of Service program, please contact the Volunteer Center for the summer of service packet, fill out the application in the back, and bring it in or fax it to the Volunteer Center of Washington County.
